Wendy Hirschberg Clurman joined Vogue as Senior Market Editor in 1993, covering the young designer market, a position that was later expanded to include the entire American market. Appointed to Fashion Market Director in 1997, reporting directly to Anna Wintour, Wendy led the Fashion Department at American Vogue.

Each season, Clurman attended the New York, London, Milan and Paris fashion shows, analyzing runway trends and forecasting future seasons. She was responsible for building compelling and insightful fashion stories, working side by side with Vogue stylists, Grace Coddington, Camilla Nickerson and Tonne Goodman. While doing this, she also advised and consulted on many designers’ collections both in America and Europe. This included Narcisso Rodriguez, Michael Kors and Tommy Hilfiger to name a few. Clurman also helped bring new talent to the forefront of the industry including Nicholas Gesquiere, who is now the Creative Director of Louis Vuitton.

Wendy’s tenure at American Vogue established new faces in the industry, directed trends and influenced the American market. It was a pivotal time for a publication that because of her leadership has since stood out as a consequential period in fashion publishing.

After leaving Vogue in 2002, Clurman began her namesake business as a Freelance Fashion Director and was hired by some of the country’s leading fashion houses to develop and merchandise, polished, well-focused and on-trend collections. Some of her clients included: Theory, Martin+Osa, Magaschoni, Nili Lotan, Estee Lauder, Anne Klein, Kors by Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Tommy Hilfiger, Ellen Tracy, Talbots, Matthew Williamson and Alice Roi.

In 2012, Wendy joined The Jones Group as VP, Fashion Director for the Jones New York brand, guiding the style and design evolution in partnership with Executive Vice President of Design, George Sharp. Clurman’s responsibilities included overseeing all visual aspects of the brand from design concept to the styling of national ad campaigns. While at The Jones Group she also conceptualized, launched and acted as VP, Creative Director of the contemporary brand, QMack, sold in 150 stores nationwide.

WHC Consulting Co. was re-launched during her time with The Jones Group in 2015. Since then, Clurman has continued to work closely with Jones as well as taking on the Fashion Director title for brands B New York, Libby Edelman, Ellen Tracy and Dear Drew all under Global Brands Group as well as contracts with Tahari, Lands End, Love Shack Fancy, Norisal Ferrari and Donna Karen. Working hand in hand with Creative Directors, her role includes creating new color stories for monthly deliveries, selecting prints and providing extensive research in order to predict upcoming trends.

In addition, Wendy plays a major role in the overall aesthetic of the collections. Starting with the inception, to fabric choices, editing designs as they are made, advertising, look-book styling and editing down to the most important pieces, to then fitting out the showroom - every visual aspect is overseen by Clurman; working alongside designers every step of the way to insure the collections outcome is on brand. Clurman also works with licensees and designs shoes, watches, scarves, jewelry and bags to create an outcome for the whole brand that reads as a clear overall message. Once the collections are complete, Wendy then visually merchandises the “buy” to portray a look to customers in a way that is consistent with the brands’ overall image. Clurman has helped attract new customers to the brands while still maintaining the core group of consumers.

Wendy Clurman’s career spanning over three decades within many realms of the industry has made her indispensable at helping brands create a message that makes sense within each brand she works on and that relates well to a fast moving market. Her ability to both work hand in hand with many Creative Directors and elevate a brand while implementing trends before they happen is what has made her one of the most in demand Fashion Consultants in the business.
